GONDBA Meeting

1/27/2016

Today's meeting was held at the Kroc Center, attended by numerous local business owners, managers, law enforcement and city and county representatives.

  • Barry Hall, president, opened the meeting, welcoming attendees and announced that Ellery Clark from USBank has agreed to serve as GONDBA treasurer.

  • Butch Brown from Downtown Dayton Radio and Town Money Saver spoke to the group about a possible marketing project for the area. He shared information about the monthly mailer that supports locally owned businesses and is looking to see if there is enough local support to launch a Dayton edition. Mailing profiles would need to be built with input from advertisers and businesses that might be interested. Contact Butch at Downtown Dayton Radio for more information

  • Matt Tepper from Evans Bakery spoke to the group about neighborhood crime issues and hot spots, as well as an idea he and Jennifer have for a Walk and Talk to discuss neighborhood issues that would increase neighborhood interaction. He also mentioned that Jerry Bowling is putting together a Winnie the Pooh reading event in May to kick of a summer reading program designed to focus on this and other efforts to keep kids occupied during the summer.

  • Connie Nisonger from City of Dayton spoke to the group about a service available at the local libraries for those who qualify for the Earned Income Credit. IRS-trained volunteers will be on-site to assist eligible workers to complete and submit tax forms, at no charge, at the Doren branch. Turkish translators will also be available. Contact Connie for more information or to receive flyers for your business to inform employees and/or residents.

  • Kervin Valez from Dayton Police Department gave crime stats and information on recent crimes and discussed the consolidation in the department.

o Crimes stats: unarmed robbery is up slightly, burglaries are actually down, primarily because they were high in the months leading up to Christmas. Several businesses have experience thefts from vehicles and actual vehicle thefts. He advised businesses to always lock vehicles and chain trailers, don’t leave keys in the vehicles and don’t leave any vehicle running unattended. If you use a GPS to track employee miles, don’t leave it in plain sight in the vehicle.

o Coffee with a Cop will be held on February 19th from 10am to Noon at the UDF on Siebenthaler.

o Beat consolidation will result in newly defined areas and larger areas to patrol, but will not mean fewer officers. There will actually be more officers available for high priority calls and any available officer from and adjacent area can respond.

o If you are reporting stolen property that is unlikely to be recovered (ie: no serial number, no evidence, no suspects), it is important to use the on-line reporting, even if small. Police manpower is allocated to areas based on reported crimes, so failure to report results in more crime as fewer officers are assigned to the area

Barry closed the meeting, thanking everyone for their participation and reminded participants to submit their dues. Our next meeting will be held on February 24th at the Kroc Center. See you then!

Thanks for keeping our businesses strong! See you next month.
